Solbari blog: Your Story Series: Meet Susan

What is your name?

My name is Susan and I am the product of a youth of sun worshiping.

Describe yourself.

I grew up in an era were weekends were beach clad bikini baby oiled affairs and a sun tan the most fashionable accessory.

How did you discover your skin cancer / melanoma / skin condition and how long ago?

Looking back I am horrified at understanding the damage all those hours in the sun were actually doing and I am paying the price for now. Dozens of sun spots on my face, neck, chest, arms and hands frozen off, a Basal Cell Carcinoma on my shoulder removed (luckily found in time) on one of my annual skin check ups with my dermatologist along with managing SCLE Lupus on my scalp for the past six years (which is extremely sun sensitive) later my visits to the beach and time outdoors are now spent very differently.

I now don't so much as visit the clothes line without my 50+ sun protection hat and sunglasses. Visits to the beach alway include above with 50+ rash vest. Driving with 50+ gloves and on longer trips 50+sleeves and every morning applying 50+sunscreen. Shade seeking and NO SUNBATHING the new norm!

I have been invited to watch the tennis later this year and was excited to see all the everyday clothing Solbari has available! Will definitely be adding the Luxe Sun Wrap UPF50+ Sensitive Collection, Luxe Sun Wrap UPF50+ Sensitive Collection and Explorer Shirt UPF50+ Dry light Comfort Stretch Collection in my suit case.

Have chosen not to go in past years worried about the prolonged sun exposure but with the above and my usual 50+ hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, I have booked my ticket with confidence and peace of mind!

What would you tell your 16-year-old self about sun protection?

My message to those reading and if I could to my sixteen year old self; cover up, it does matter! Stay sun safe to look your best and be well now and later!

Thank you Susan for helping raise awareness for skin cancer, melanoma and skin conditions, and sharing your story with us and our Solbari Community.
