MEET SOLBARI CO-FOUNDER,
Johanna Young knows first hand how devastating skin cancer and melanoma can be on individuals and their families. Through family members’ experiences and working with skin cancer charities, Johanna has seen the effects of these illnesses.
"Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the World as 2 in 3 of us will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. Skin cancer accounts for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers in Australia. We have become the global experts in skin cancer research, prevention, detection and treatment out of necessity."
"However, skin cancer is not an Australian only phenomenon, for example, more than 5 million cases of skin cancer are treated in the U.S. each year."
"The good news is that whilst skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer it is also one of the most preventable because about 90 percent of skin cancer cases are linked to ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure from the sun."
Solbari's aim is to export Australian UPF50+ Sun Protection excellence globally.
SUN PROTECTIVE CLOTHING IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE SOLAR BARRIER
"Most people would be shocked to discover that regular clothing may only provide as little as UPF5 protection which is the equivalent of SPF5 for sunscreen. Until a fabric is laboratory tested it is not certain what level of protection it may offer."
With her own preference for natural fibre clothing, Johanna travelled from Milan to Taipei to find the right natural fibre mix that would provide maximum sun protection.
"Solbari only uses fabrics which not only meet the stringent Australian UPF50+ sun protective testing regime standards but are fabrics which are also comfortable to wear in hot sunny conditions." After 18 months of research, Johanna found what she was looking for.
