After working as a volunteer for the Cancer Council in Victoria for a couple of years, Johanna Young came to appreciate the devastating effects of skin cancer in Australia.
Wanting to make a difference and attempt to stem the tide, Johanna established SOLBARI in Melbourne in 2013.
Not wanting to follow the traditional business model, Johanna decided that the SOLBARI reason for being should be centered around a straight forward social mission.
SOLBARI's social mission is to provide an effective sun (SOL) barrier (BARI) to help eliminate skin cancer from Australian society.
Skin cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer; and the main cause is the cumulative effect of sun exposure. Regular clothing such as a white cotton t-shirt or hat may only provide a protection equivalent to sunscreen SPF5.
SOLBARI's products are made of sun protective fabrics that all have the maximum UPF50+ sun protective rating from the responsible Australian Government Agency (ARPANSA) along with the approval of Melanoma International Foundation in the United States. A UPF50+ is the equivalent to wearing a SPF50+ sunscreen.
Johanna's idea is a simple one. Design and produce stylish, lightweight and comfortable UPF50+ sun protective clothing, swimwear and sun hats that people want to wear and protect their skin at the same time.
