When Johanna Young moved to Australia from the UK in 2011 she was shocked at how strong the sun’s ultraviolet rays were and by the rates of skin cancer.

Her determination to do something about it was the genesis for Solbari, which makes clothing to protect people from UV rays and help prevent melanoma and skin cancer.

“I was doing voluntary work at the Cancer Council in Victoria when I discovered the extent of skin cancer and how over 95 per cent of skin cancers are caused by sun exposure and that regular clothing doesn’t necessarily protect your skin adequately,” she says.

Solbari designs, develops and markets sun protective clothing, sun hats and accessories with the equivalent of SPF50+ sun protection around the world.

The company started in 2014 when Young began researching fabrics and travelling to mills in Asia and Europe, and then sold its first products in 2015.

It now sells in more than 120 countries, with close to 40 per cent of its revenue coming from the US, followed by the UK and Canada. Its offshore sales have risen from $2.6 million in the 2020 financial year to $8.5 million in 2022.

Although Solbari is an online brand and so could continue to trade during the COVID lockdowns, the pandemic presented its own challenges. In particular, the company discovered at the end of April 2020 that there were 4000 packages sitting on the dock in Melbourne, which it thought had already been sent to customers. It quickly found a more reliable courier company and was able to catch up on the backlog.

Young is focused on continuous improvement for the company: better products, more sustainable fabrics, educating the community on the benefits of sun protection and building the team. “If we can deliver more value to our community over time, the financial performance and growth will take care of itself,” she says.

11 Sun-Protective Clothing Essentials You'll Actually Wear

You're probably (well, should be) stocked to the brim in regards to sunscreen for any exposed skin, but is your wardrobe protecting the parts that are seemingly covered up? If not, the best UV protection clothing items are definitely worth checking out. In case you didn't know, there's a nearly endless supply of closet essentials like t-shirts, hoodies, and even leggings that are certified to protect your skin against harsh sun rays while looking cool as a cucumber in the process.

Just like how our favorite sunscreens have a sun protection factor (also known as SPF) rating, clothes that provide sun protection are usually labeled with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) rating. This number indicates how much UV radiation (both UVB and UVA) a fabric allows to reach your skin, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. The same rule of SPF applies to UPF, as the SCF suggests wearing clothes with a UPF rating of at least 30 to avoid harmful UV damage.

So, are UPF clothing options a legitimate source of sun protection during long days of outdoor activities? According to Erum Ilyas, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, absolutely. "UPF protection clothing is considered the gold standard for UV protection as it provides reliable, sustained, and practical broad-spectrum protection against both forms of UV light," she says.

Your closet could use a summer refresh, so why not treat yourself and your skin to these stylish UPF clothes? Whether you're on the hunt for trendy cover-ups to wear during sunny days by the pool or sun protection shirts made of lightweight fabrics for optimal breathability, we've got you covered — literally.

Solbari Luxe Sun Wrap UPF 50+

As its name suggests, the Solbari Luxe Sun Wrap UPF 50+ is meant to be a cover-up for your beachside moments, but we can see ourselves wearing this comfy cardigan year-round. It's also worth mentioning that this sweater features thumb holes so you can cover the back of your hands to prevent sun spots.

10 Essential Skincare Tips for Summer, According to a Hollywood Plastic Surgeon

This year, consider a new golden rule for summer travel: it’s far more important to know where your hat and sunscreen are than your passport. How you protect your face and body will likely determine how many times you’re begging your dermatologist, plastic surgeon or aesthetician to help reverse your tired, dry, and sun-spotted skin come September.

There’s no better season to be hypervigilant about your skin—a fact that Dr. Catherine Chang, one of the most prominent plastic surgeons in the United States, knows well. The board-certified Harvard fellow works as a facial and plastic reconstructive surgeon, and is not only beloved by clients all over the world, she’s also kept on speed dial by top Hollywood publicists (many of whom freely admit they talk to Chang more than their own mothers). An American-born daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, Chang climbed the ranks with talent and artistry, rising to the top of the her profession despite the statistics working against her (only 20 percent of all plastic surgeons are women, and less than 10 percent specialize in facial plastic surgery specifically). Today, she’s become an expert in devising the latest surgical and facial innovations. Chang has also gained a reputation for never mincing words, especially when it comes to medical science vs. unsubstantiated beauty claims. “I for one am not a big fan of ‘natural” skincare,’” Chang tells me. “Plastic surgery in my opinion is the most effective way to look younger.” )So perhaps you’re safe to throw out that pricey bottle of Kazakhstan-sourced linseed oil, which was regurgitated several times over by a mountain goat for its skin-healing, enzymatic properties.)

As the temps warm and sun-seekers begin to partake in summer activities, Dr. Chang shares with W her skincare insights, as well as the regimens and products she thinks are worthy.

Sun Spots on Hands

“I think when we are young, we don’t care about sun damage to our hands,” Dr. Chang says. “But as a plastic surgeon, I see many patients who want to improve their appearance and the quality/texture of their skin on both their face and hands. I always recommend applying sunblock to your hands. I also always apply extra skincare products to the tops of my hands. Additionally, living in L.A. and driving constantly I feel like the top of my hands are constantly in the line of fire of the sun. Now, in addition to applying sunblock, I always wear driving gloves. (I recommend ones by Solbari.) Using lasers such as CO2 and IPL are helpful to improve texture of the hands as well as improve sunspots. I also recommend adding filler or fat grafting to the hands to help increase the thickness of the top of the hand, so it doesn’t look as deflated. These changes. while subtle, can help achieve a more youthful appearance of the hands to better match the face.

“Also, I am not a big fan of holistic topicals as I like to prescribe treatments based on science and data. That is not to say that holistic treatments don’t work, but I find the variability of the results are wide, and reactions are more unpredictable.”

Face sunscreen? Check. Travel-size tube for on-the-go touch ups? Check. SPF for below the neck? Check, check, and check. Go ahead and pat yourself on the back, but know that sun safety doesn’t stop there. Lotions and potions are one thing, but going one step further with UV-protective clothing and accessories will take you from novice to expert in terms of safe sun. “UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) clothing is specially designed to provide an extra layer of protection against the sun,” Melissa Kanchanapoomi Levin, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Entiere Dermatology tells Refinery29. “It is woven tightly and often made from fabrics that offer a high UPF rating, such as polyester, nylon, and certain types of cotton.” Whereas sunscreens have an SPF rating, a number corresponding to the length of time where your skin is protected from UV rays, clothing has a UPF rating, which refers to the amount of UV exposure that can penetrate fabric and affect your skin.

Solbari Bondi Bucket Hat UPF50+

The ‘90s kid in me welcomes the return of the bucket hat, and this one has been tested and rated UPF 50 by Australian standards. According to Solbari, it’s equivalent to wearing SPF 50 sunscreen (though that doesn’t mean you can skimp on how much you apply on your skin).

Summer is just around the corner, and that means it’s time to hit the beach—but not before you make sure your skin is properly protected. While sunscreen is a no-brainer addition to your beach bag, the best sun hats can help you shield your skin from harmful UV rays.

Unlike your basic ball cap or visor, sun hats are actually made with fabrics that offer UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) ratings of up to 50. According to Jaimie DeRosa, MD, a dermatologist at DeRosa Center Plastic Surgery & Med Spa, UPF 50 material can block up to 98% of the sun's UVA and UVB rays. When our skin is consistently left unprotected and exposed to these harmful rays, they can cause photoaging and skin cancer.

"A sun hat provides a physical barrier from the sun and helps to assure that you get additional protection when wearing sunscreen," Dr. DeRosa explains, adding that it can also help shield those harder-to-reach places like your scalp, ears, and neck. In addition to keeping your skin safe, Dr. DeRosa also says that sun hats can keep color-treated hair looking fresh. With all of these benefits, it’s no wonder why sun hats are a beach-day staple.

To help you pick the perfect sun hat for your wardrobe, we’ve reached out to some of the leading dermatologists for their personal picks and researched the most popular options on the web. These are the 10 best sun hats of 2023.

Most Packable: Solbari Holiday Sun Hat

It's made out of a linen-cotton blend that offers UPF 50 protection and is extremely lightweight and packable—all you have to do is fold it up and tuck it away.

Overexposure to sun rays causes superficial harm like premature signs of aging and, worst of all, DNA damage that affects our skin on a cellular level. So yes, there’s something to be said about the benefits of feeling the warmth of the sun on our faces, but there's certainly such a thing as too much of a good thing.

That’s why it’s so important to get the right protective sun hat for travel, whether you’re in need of something made from straw to accompany you on your next beach vacation, a cap well-suited for the golf links, or a hat that provides maximum breathability for high-exertion activities such as hiking.

While nothing is going to truly prevent sun damage quite like some good old SPF, our picks of the best sun hats for men do a pretty good job of helping out.

Most Packable: Solbari Traveller Broad Brim Sun Hat UPF50+

If anyone knows about living in the sunshine, it’s the Australian brand Solbari. This Traveller sun hat is designed for sun-soaked adventures of all kinds, whether you’re exploring deep inside the Outback or just opting for a beach day a little closer to home. The broad brim shape provides excellent coverage for your face, eyes, and neck, and the hat itself is lightweight and designed to be packed deep in your luggage for the most long-haul journeys. Pull it out of your baggage, give it a shake, and this hat is ready to go.

Sunnier weather means finally planning that Instagrammable pic or camping trip or taking your Rollerblades for a spin. Maybe it simply means leaving your house for the first time in months like a squirrel tasting freedom after hibernation season. Not to rain on anyone’s parade (or aforementioned picnic), but large bodies of research show the more time spent outdoors, the higher your chance of skin damage. And while a tan might create the illusion of a “healthy glow,” there’s really no such thing as a safe tan, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. That’s why we’re stocking our wardrobes with garments infused with sun-safe SPF/UPF to give your precious skin that extra level of protection so you can safely load up on all the mood- and immunity-boosting vitamin D.

What is UPF clothing?

“UPF stands for ultraviolet protection factor, which measures a garment’s ability to block your skin from all UV rays,” says Dr. Aanand Geria, a board-certified dermatologist. He describes UPF as being similar to sunscreen’s SPF, the sun protection factor, with the main difference being that SPF only applies to UVB rays, while UPF applies to both UVA and UVB rays. “Most clothing will give some degree of protection from UV rays; however, certain pieces are specifically tested and marketed to supply ample protection,” he says.

The mechanism behind UPF clothing is simple: Dr. Shasa Hu, MD, FAAD, associate professor, Dr. Philip Frost Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery, says she is a “huge fan of UPF clothing” [because] they provide additional protection either through weaved fabrics, or those that are impregnated with special chemicals that filter out UV rays. “Because of this, they don’t last forever, usually only 50 to 80 washes depending on the quality. UPF clothing is definitely a better alternative to just sunscreen for outdoor activities or people with a very active lifestyle,” she says.

While you’ll still have to slather on your sunscreen to protect exposed skin on your body, the following UPF/SPF-infused clothing are bound to be your full-time BFFs this spring and summer, recommended by the outdoorsy folks who wear it most.

Solbari UPF50+ Protective Broad Brim Sun Hat

“This hat is made of a soft, lightweight fabric that is super comfortable, quick-drying and durable,” says Geria. “It offers UPF 50+ protection for your head and face to help maintain healthy skin. This hat is adjustable to fit almost any head shape, and as a plus, it’s foldable for travel and storage purposes.”

Well Intentioned: Courteney Cox on Staying in the Moment and the Pursuit of Olfactory Happiness

Courteney Cox has always been particular about fragrances—and not just her own fragrances. “I can’t stand when I see somebody and they have a strong scent. That’s their business,” she says with a laugh before descending into an all-too-familiar anecdote about hugging an olfactory offender and having their fragrance get stuck in your hair and on your clothes until you essentially have to wear someone else’s scent for the rest of the day. “It makes me crazy!” she continues, effectively qualifying the degree of her obsession with perfume. “But, anyway, that’s where it started,” the actor turned brand founder says of Homecourt, the beauty meets home care brand she launched last year. Cox, who had been mixing her own fragrance blend of smoky wood, spices, and leather notes for years, originally just wanted to make a candle, but during lockdown she had an epiphany while wiping every surface in her Malibu home with Clorox (stars, they’re just like us): What if our cleaning products could be effective, smell nice, be good for us—and look good on our counters too?

Cox loves cleaning, but the line goes beyond her excellent dish soap and surface cleanser, which feature plant-based surfactants and come in four different scents, including Cece, a riff on her personal fragrance with hints of sweet cardamom, carrot leaf, and patchouli. There’s also a hand wash, a decadent shea-butter-laced hand cream, some covetable candles, and her newest innovation: a zinc- and charcoal-spiked room deodorant that works to neutralize bad smells instead of just masking them with high-end perfume notes. “Each scent has a different vibe,” Cox explains of her considered fragrance blends, an exercise in curation that she says has helped “exercise” her brain. But the Friends alum and Instagram humorist is equally adept at quieting a racing mind, especially when it keeps her up at night. Here, Cox shares her go-to tool for better sleep and why purging toxic people from your life is just as important as tidying up your shelves and drawers. “In the words of Marie Condo, if it doesn’t make you happy, get rid of it.”

1. Stay Grounded in the Moment
It’s really important to stay in the moment, but I have ADD so that’s particularly hard for me. I have so many moments in my head and I just wanna go do them all at once. So for me, one way of being present is to try to take care of what’s happening now. It’s so easy to say, “Oh, I’ll worry about that later,” about certain things. I did this a lot when I was younger. I didn’t care about anything to do with my body. It was like, my body’s fine! I’m young and my skin’s good! Who cares if I lay in the sun! I wouldn’t ever wear moisturizer. And then as I got older I’m like, why didn’t I focus on any of these things?! So I just try to take care of myself in every way now and not put any of it off—whether it’s mentally, physically, all of it. We spend so much time in the future and in the past. I think it’s really important to just enjoy every moment now.

2. Support Good Sleep Habits
It’s really hard to stay present if you’re not sleeping. I’m a terrible sleeper, but if I sleep terribly for three nights…that fourth night, man, I’m gonna get the best sleep. Although I have a new thing that I figured out to do. The other night, I got up in the middle of the night and was worried I wasn’t going to be able to go back to sleep, so I got out my LightStim. It’s always next to my bed. It looks like something from a dentist’s office and it’s in the background of every Zoom I sign on to. I care a lot about the way things look, so I don’t know why this has made the cut, but it’s no joke. And the other night, I thought, Okay, I’ll put that on my face and see. And I got so relaxed that I went back to sleep. It was incredible. So I’m going to try that every night.

3. Have Hobbies
I love hobbies. I think it’s really important to have things that engage and inspire you. We’re all working all the time, and it’s just nice to have other things to look forward to. I love to cook and I love to play the piano and I love to play tennis and I love to putter. Puttering is a big one for me. If you just have time during the day where someone says, “you have nothing to do for the next hour and a half,” I just go through my house. I recently redid my bookshelf. I don’t read—sorry! I try. But when there are too many words on a page, I just get overwhelmed and it’s hard for my mind to slow down. I’m just not a reader. But I love design books, art books. Tommy and Kathleen Clements’s Eight Homes is really good. I must have like, three copies. And you can just keep looking and looking at it and you always find something new. I also love Axel Vervoordt and I’m a big fan of Richard Misrach. I have a piece of his, a photograph, and I actually met him and he was the coolest, nicest human being. So then he sent me all of his books and I love to look at them over and over.

4. Exercise Your Body and Your Mind
I have a new trainer, who I love. She’s a physical therapist—that’s how we started together, because I had some back issues—and now I work out with her three days a week. I just expanded the gym at my house and I’m so in love with it. I have a few machines and then I have one of those Bosu Balls to do leg presses. But she puts me through it. Say maybe I’ll be on the treadmill for three minutes, and then I’ll be on a machine, and then I have a leg press, and she’ll have me do crunches. I think machines are so much more fun than doing mat work. But she kind of incorporates both. And then I play tennis twice a week. I look horrible when I play tennis. [Laughs]. I mean, I used to wear cute little shorts; now, it’s just not the same. I wear one of those turtleneck sunscreen things, my Asics sneakers, a hat, and I’ve got the wrist band, the elbow band, the knee brace, I’ve got sunscreen on. And I wear an Apple watch because I really care how high my heart rate gets! My mind is the thing that actually needs [to] chill, but I’m always exercising it too. Homecourt is a huge part of this. I get to be creative. We have the cleaning products, and we have the hand care, and the air care. I always burn the Cece candles, because that’s my scent. It’s a fragrance blend that I’ve been wearing forever. I went to a dinner the other night and someone was like, “Oh, my God, you smell like your stuff.” And I was like, “Yeah, that stuff smells like me!” But our new room deodorant actually neutralizes odors. It’s probably one of my favorite products. I’m really proud of it. You can use it in any room, but some rooms are more important than others!

We all know the importance of sun protection by now. Yes, you should apply (and reapply!) sunscreen every day, but don’t underestimate the importance of a sun hat (bonus points if you also slather on scalp sunscreen). Not only will it complete your stylish summer ensemble, it will also help minimize sun exposure, possibly preventing age spots and other skin damage.

“Hats definitely work when it comes to sun protection,” says board-certified cosmetic dermatologist DiAnne Davis, MD. She recommends opting for a wide-brimmed hat that covers not only your face but your ears and neck as well. She also suggests steering clear of straw hats with looser weaves, which don’t provide adequate protection. Think of it this way: If you can see through the construction, UV rays can also filter through.

“It's important to cover up as much of your skin as possible if you are going to be spending time outdoors,” adds Davis, who also suggests wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, and sunglasses with UV protection.

With that in mind, whether you're on the hunt for a wide-brim straw hat to go with your new swimsuit, a trendy bucket design for every day, a packable style for travel, or a sporty version with UPF50+ for hiking, boating, or gardening, we selected the best sun hats to sport—including similar options to Oprah's go-to from The Salting—as we head into warm weather season.

The arrival of summer means open-toe sandals, maxi dresses and more garments that leave your exposed. Being prepped with the right sunscreen, a beach umbrella for shade and sun-protective clothing will help in many situations, but one of the best (and easiest) ways to protect our faces from the unbearable heat during outdoor activities is a sun hat.

To avoid hyperpigmentation and other long-lasting skin issues, Shop TODAY spoke with a handful of experts to get the lowdown on why it's essential to protect yourself from the sun throughout the year. We also found some of the best sun hats on the market to help shield your face from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Why do I need accessories and clothing with UPF?
If you're looking for the ultimate sun protection, experts advise investing in clothes and accessories with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating.

“Broad-brimmed hats are one of the most important steps when it comes to safe sun practices,” said New York-based dermatologist Melissa Levin. “Heavy perspiration, water activities and incomplete application of sunscreen lend to sunscreen products that rub off and lose their effectiveness, resulting in incomplete sun protection.”

“All fabrics can shield some UV radiation, but clothing [and hats] that are designed to do the most effective job are items that are labeled with a UPF rating. The ratings range from UPF 15 to 50+. The higher the number, the better,” she added.

If you're trying to protect yourself from skin cancer, the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends looking for clothing with a UPF of at least 30.

“Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas account for about 90 percent of all skin cancers, and often appear on the head and neck,” a representative for the Skin Cancer Foundation told us. “Hats help safeguard your face, scalp and neck.”

What UPF clothing protects against?
"When you're talking about UPF, you're talking about protection from ultraviolet B rays and ultraviolet A rays. When you look at the number, a UPF of 50...blocks 98 percent of sun rays. When it comes to protection, anything above 50 is considered excellent by the Skin Cancer Foundation," commented New York board-certified dermatologist Jeremy A. Brauer, MD.

Protecting your neck, ears and face are essential when you're exposing your skin to the sun. One component Brauer recommends looking for is color, specifically "bright colors that are reflective and darker colors can absorb those rays and avoided penetration."

In addition to a protective hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are always a good idea for optimal summer safety.

“Hats are a perfect complement to UV-filtering sunglasses and broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your face and eyes,” said the SCF.

While there are plenty of trendy sun hat options, it’s also important you invest in a design that will actually protect your skin.

“The best hats for sun protection have a brim of at least three inches to shade the face, scalp, neck, shoulders and upper back, along with easily overlooked places like the tops of the ears and back of the neck,” the SCF states. “Look for a tightly woven hat rather than a loosely constructed straw hat that lets in the UV rays.”

Can you get sunburn through a hat?
Though UPF accessories and clothing provide protection from the sun, ultraviolet light can still penetrate through these garments. Brauer mentioned that while you should not expect a sunburn when you wear sunscreen and UPF clothing appropriately, there are always exceptions to the rule.

"Nothing is 100 percent, but the expectation is that UPF 50+ allows minimum sun rays and you shouldn't expect a sunburn."

With a near-perfect rating, this is the sun hat that will keep you summer-ready. It features an ultra-wide brim to protect your face, neck and shoulders. With the hottest months of the year approaching, sun protection is top of mind for many travelers. And while sunscreen is a given, one of the most convenient, if lesser-utilized, ways to keep your skin healthy is by packing clothes that have built-in UPF.

UPF measures the amount of UV radiation that can penetrate fabric and reach your skin. For example, a UPF 50 fabric blocks 98 percent of the sun’s rays, reducing exposure risk significantly, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.

"Wearing UPF clothing and SPF protects against the development of skin cancer and reduces the risk of photoaging, which can present as sun spots, fine lines, and wrinkles,” dermatologist Dr. Joanne Simpson, MD, MPH says.

Simpson uses the example of a basic white T-shirt, which, even if not marked, has a UPF of approximately seven. If the shirt gets wet, the UPF goes down to three. When it comes to regular, non UPF-specified clothing, Simpson’s recommends choosing darker colors and tightly woven fabrics. But for even more protection, look for clothing with a UPF rating above 30 (50 is the highest and most protective).

UPF clothing is especially important for those who work outdoors, have a sensitivity to certain sunscreen ingredients, or are active around water, Simpson says, making it a great packing list addition for your next boating adventure, waterfall hike, or trip to the beach. Since children tend to wiggle during sunscreen application, UPF clothing from brands like Reima can be especially helpful, too.

Thankfully, UPF clothing seems to get easier to find with each summer season as more brands are understanding the need and desire for sun protection. Below, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite pieces of UPF clothing, keeping style, comfort, and versatility in mind when choosing these travel-friendly picks.

Solbari fishing and hiking shirt UPF 50
Solbari’s entire blog is dedicated to skin health, which should tell you something about the brand’s commitment to sun protection. Along with a beautiful line of men’s and women’s swimwear, Solbari offers lightweight clothing like this men’s activewear shirt, which is functional, breathable, and anti-odor.

Solbari reversible ultra wide brim hat UPF 50
Solbari truly offers a hat for every head. This reversible hat is ultra-packable and great for adventurers who may find themselves in the elements a bit longer than anticipated. Beyond just headwear, the brand offers sun protection by way of hand covers and arm sleeves, too.

While sunblock (and SPF moisturizer) is certainly your best protection against the blazing sun, you should also consider wearing sun-protective clothing as another layer of defense. Historically, UPF clothing hasn’t been the most fashionable, but luckily there are now a handful of stylish and protective options from various brands online.

In an effort to help you find the most reliable sun-protective garments, The Post interviewed a handful of doctors and experts on the best UPF brands — plus the importance of wearing UPF clothing.

What is UPF clothing?
UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor.

“A UPF rating is given to fabrics that protect your skin from the sun and indicates what fraction of the sun’s ultraviolet rays can penetrate a piece of fabric,” Lisa Chipps, MD, a board-certified dermatologist practicing in Beverly Hills and a spokesperson for the Skin Cancer Foundation, told The Post.

“The [SCF] recommends choosing clothing with a UPF of at least 30 to provide sufficient sun protection. A UPF of 30 to 49 offers very good protection, while UPF 50+ is best.”

Why is it important to wear UPF clothing?
“Protecting yourself against the sun’s harmful UV rays can reduce your risk of developing skin cancer and prevent premature skin aging,” Chipps said, noting that “about 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers and 86 percent of melanomas are caused by UV radiation.” “Using sun protective clothing is one part of an effective sun protection routine, which also includes applying sunscreen, seeking shade, and avoiding exposure at peak sun hours between 10 AM and 4 PM.”

Why can’t I wear my regular clothes instead?
While you may love wearing your favorite T-shirt to the beach, it won’t necessarily be the best line of defense when it comes to UV protection.

“A UPF of 50 blocks out 49/50 or 98% of UV rays when worn,” board-certified dermatologist Dr. Azadeh Shirazi said. “A white t-shirt only has an SPF of 8.”

Chipps further explained that while covering your skin with any clothing is a step in the right direction, “not all clothing is created equal.”

“There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing a fabric for sun protection purposes,” Chipps said. “First, look at the tightness of the fabric’s weave. A tightly woven piece with smaller holes between the thread, like denim, will offer more protection than one with an open weave, like a crocheted shawl.”

“Next, thicker and darker fabrics are more protective than thin, light fabrics. A bleached cotton offers little protection, whereas a black corduroy would block more UV radiation.” Chipps said. “Finally, synthetic materials are better for UV protection than natural ones. The advantage of wearing clothing with a UPF rating is that it ensures you can be confident about the level of protection that clothing is providing.”

UPF clothing brands, recommended by experts
1. Solbari
Celebrity esthetician Candace Marino loves Solbari UPF clothing, a brand that offers a variety of items ranging from women’s and men’s clothing as well as skincare and accessories.

“Solbari does basics really well, and they’re lightweight, making them wearable or [easy to layer] for any climate. They [have many different] UPF clothing [options] for all occasions and their styles range from athleisure to business,” said Marino. “I personally have a few of their long-sleeve T-shirts and leggings. Their lightweight fabric is perfect for a hike and I’ll keep a [Solbari] shirt in my bag any time I’m at the beach or by a pool.”

2.Lilly Pulitzer
Two experts we interviewed for this piece really enjoy wearing and recommending Lilly Pulitzer UPF clothing. Whether you’re looking for a sun-protective sweatshirt to wear on a chillier day or a protective tennis skirt, the brand has you covered with tons of colorful options.

“I like the UPF clothing from Lilly Pulitzer because they have a wide variety of options,” said Shirazi. “From athletic wear, everyday pieces, swimwear and even clothing for the kids — it’s easy to find everything you need. It’s also very fashion-forward which I love.”

“Lilly Pulitzer’s clothing is so cute, and the bright colors and patterns are perfect for summer,” Engelman added. “Their clothing takes you from the beach to gatherings with friends and family.”

3. Mott50
Dr. Dendy Engelman, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist, can’t say enough great things about Mott50. The trendy UPF swimwear and clothing brand offers options for women, men, kids, babies and more.

“My family and I love Mott50, and I feel confident that my children are comfortable and well protected in Mott50’s lightweight, UPF 50+ fabric,” Engelman raved. “Mott50 offers so many bright, beautiful patterns and styles that there’s something for everyone, and it’s fun to mix and match their different pieces.”

Marino also really enjoys Mott50 UPF clothing specifically the Dapper Lounge Pants.

“Oftentimes when people think about sun protection they think of the upper half of the body and forget that our legs need protection too,” Marino said. “These pants make it easy to ensure the lower half of the body is just as protected. [They] can be dressed up or worn casually and are great for travel.”

4. Janessa Leoné
If you’re on the hunt for a fashionable UPF-friendly sun hat and don’t mind spending a few extra bucks, Janessa Leoné is the perfect place to shop.

“This is the only brand doing UPF products that’s actually fashion-forward,” Marino stated. “While most brands’ designs are catering to children and seniors, her hats are something that will become an instant staple in anyone’s wardrobe and no one will know that you’re wearing a UPF product.”

5. Cabana Life
Engelman is a big advocate for Cabana Life due to its brand story.

“Cabana Life was founded after one of its two female founders was diagnosed with skin cancer,” Engelman said. “The two women decided to create stylish clothing that also offers great sun protection.”

“As a dermatologist and Moh’s surgeon, I see a lot of patients who suffer from skin cancer or have concerning spots due to sun damage, so I am constantly advising my patients to protect themselves properly,” Engelman added. “I really appreciate the thoughtfulness that goes into Cabana Life’s clothing and the message they are sharing about sun safety.”

Whether it's finally warming up where you live or you're heading out to a beach vacation, you need protection if you're spending time in the sun. A good sun hat is "absolutely critical" according to Dr. Melanie D. Palm, a board-certified dermatologist based in San Diego. "Even on cloudy days, we still are exposed to 80 percent of the UV of a sunny day."

Ideally, your hat will have a UPF factor of 50+ and at least a 4-inch brim to guarantee you're getting enough coverage from damaging UV rays. We also looked for hats specifically designated as packable or travel-friendly to make sure they're easy to toss into a suitcase or beach bag and then pop on at your destination with no structural damage.

"Sun-protective clothing is one of the easiest and most important tools we can use to protect our skin from the harmful rays of the sun and allow us to enjoy the outdoors safely," says Pasadena-based, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Ivy Lee. A crucial factor, though? Making sure you like it enough to actually wear it. "I've seen many expensive UPF 50+ hats that sit lonely on a closet shelf," says Lee.

These are the best packable sun hats to shop:

Best for Hiking: Solbari Wanderer Sun Hat
Why We Love It: A removable chin strap and water-resistant fabric keep the Wanderer fit for wherever your adventure may lead.

    What to Consider:
Since the fabric is designed to be light and breathable, the brim may blow around a bit in the wind.

A more adventure-friendly option from dermatologist-recommended Solbari, the Wanderer Sun Hat works for both trail or teatime afterward. It has a removable chin strap to make sure your hat doesn't fly off on a windy boat ride, then you can switch over to a more chic look when it's time for afternoon cocktails. It's also water- and stain-resistant, so any drops in puddles or unexpected showers won't be a problem. The soft, stretchy fabric comes in five colors, but we're especially fond of the stylish mulberry shade. It's available in three sizes and also includes an adjustable drawcord at the back to fine-tune your fit.

Best Active, Men's: Solbari Traveller Broad Brim Sun Hat
    Why We Love It:
The Traveller will stay on and keep you out of the sun even in the choppiest waters.

    What to Consider:
The brim is shorter than dermatologists recommend, but the high UPF helps make up for it.

This straightforward men's hat is one of the most popular designs from Solibari. It has just a 3-inch brim, but it still maintains a UPF of 50 in the fabric. The water- and stain-resistant nylon should hold up to the even intense hiking or water activities; if the seas get rough, the chin strap and its locking toggle, as well as the drawstring at the back of the hat to adjust the fit, make sure it will stay on. There's also an integrated sweatband and mesh paneling on both sides to stay breezy. Choose from white or beige with navy accent, or go full navy.

Best Bucket Hat: Solbari Getaway Reversible Sun Hat
    Why We Love It:
Bucket hats are coming back in style, and the longer brim on this reversible option keeps it on-trend and protective.

    What to Consider:
This brim is a little shorter than the dermatologist recommendation.

If bucket hats are more your style, go for the Getaway. This reversible option sneaks in at a 3.75-inch brim that's also shapeable, so you can adjust it over the course of the day. Choose from the neutral black-and-white option or three ice cream hues that will have you ready to hit the boardwalk; just pop up the brim to show off your color selection. Sun protection doesn't mean sacrificing breathability; the hat is 100% cotton to help keep air flowing and prevent sweat buildup. That cotton build also means rolling it up and throwing it in your luggage won't be a problem.

Tips for Buying Packable Sun Hats
    Look for UPF
The first qualification to look for in a good sun hat is its UPF, or UV protection factor, grading. As the name implies, this system indicates the item's level of protection against ultraviolet energy, taking into account color, weave density, and fabric. Lee cites a UPF factor of 50 as the general dermatologist recommendation, which means it will protect your skin from 98 percent of UV radiation.

Think about brim size and material
The next thing you want to look for is the structure of the hat itself. Ideally you want a brim of at least 4 inches and not too many openings in the structure for sun to sneak through. "Because a broad-brim hat also provides you with your own shade structure, the hat may protect your eyes from UV rays," says Lee. "A broad-brim hat is an easy, effective, and fashionable way to keep our skin safe and healthy."

Materials themselves can vary, as long as they have sufficient UPF. "Tighter weaves, darker colors, and believe it or not, washed fabrics (which shrink the weave) are more advantageous," says Palm. If a hat doesn't have a UPF rating, you can try holding it up to the light and seeing how much light gets through.

30 Best UPF Clothing Options That Are Stylish—And Remarkably Protective

By now we all know that sunscreen is a must when it comes to protecting your skin from melanoma, sunburn, sun poisoning, and premature aging. UPF clothing (or sun-protective clothing), however, might be new to you. When you think about sun-safe clothing, what are the first things that come to mind? Perhaps shapeless shrouds, hiking gear, and wide-brim hats? Luckily, UPF knowledge has spread over the past few years, and now we have more options when it comes to protecting vulnerable skin.

    What does UPF mean?
UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor, and it’s an umbrella term for UVA and UVB protection. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UPF is different from SPF (sun protection factor) in that UPF measures the amount of UV radiation that can go through the fabric, whereas SPF is based on the amount of time it takes for UV-exposed skin to burn. UPF clothing is important because it protects the body parts that we don’t normally put sunscreen on (a common sunscreen mistake), thus decreasing your risk of exposure to harmful rays.

What should you look for in sun-protective clothing?
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, when shopping for sun-safe gear, you should first look for its seal of recommendation. In order to receive the Skin Cancer Foundation’s seal, an article of clothing must offer a UPF rating of at least 30. UPF 30 to 49 offers very good protection, while UPF 50+ offers excellent protection, shielding skin from approximately 98% of the sun’s rays. They also suggest considering the following factors for clothing that’s not specifically labeled as UPF:

  • Dark or bright colors, which absorb UV rays rather than allowing them to penetrate.
  • Densely woven fabric, like denim, canvas, and wool.
  • Loose-fitting, high-coverage silhouettes.
  • Fabric compositions like unbleached cotton, shiny/satiny synthetic fibers, and higher-tech activewear.

Below, we found 30 pieces of actually stylish UV protective clothing from brands and retailers like Outdoor Voices, Athleta, Amazon, and Lululemon. You’ll find breezy long-sleeve T-shirts, versatile dresses, and thoughtfully-made hats. Everything on this list has a UPF rating of 30 or higher to keep you protected while exercising, camping, swimming, and lounging.

    Dresses and Cover-Ups
There are plenty of stylish sheath dresses, midi-dresses, workout dresses, and more with built-in sun protection. We love Summersalt’s colorful shirtdress for our next beach day, and Solbari’s long-sleeve midi is full-coverage but has a slimmer silhouette for more shape. Outdoor Voices’ moisture-wicking one-shoulder dress has built-in support for activities like jogging or tennis.

    Hats and Accessories
Hats are the easiest foray into UPF gear because chances are you already have one! These options from Solbari and Arc’teryx are adjustable and secure, making them ideal for boating or windy beach days. You can also opt for a pair of arm sleeves, which offer UPF 50+.

    Swimsuits and Rash Guards
Upgrade your swimwear with more protective styles like these, which all shield your skin from harmful rays. Lululemon’s stylish rash guard is excellent for water sports and Torrid’s retro-style halter is cute enough to wear all on its own.

    UPF T-Shirts and Sun Shirts
If you know anything about UPF clothing, you’re probably the most familiar with full-coverage, button-down sun shirts. As the world has gained more knowledge about sun safety and protection, more and more brands have developed UPF gear that looks like, well, normal clothing. Outdoor Voices’ new Solarcool collection is funky, temperature-regulating, and UPF 50+. Lululemon has a breezy long sleeve that makes an excellent protective beach shirt, and there are plenty of options at Amazon that are ideal for rugged hikes.

    UPF Activewear
If you enjoy working out outdoors (or even close to a sunny window indoors), it’s a good idea to look for UPF fabrics in your activewear. Remember: Any body part that’s covered by fabric isn’t getting slathered in sunscreen and is unprotected unless your clothing has UPF. Amazon’s Baleaf brand has quick-drying shorts with a UPF of 50 for hiking and running. You also might want to consider a high-neck UPF sports bra for outdoor workouts to protect your chest. And, surprisingly enough, just because you’re wearing leggings doesn't mean your legs are automatically protected from harmful UV rays: Athleta’s durable leggings are UPF 50+.

    UPF Sweatshirts and Jackets
Whether you’re an athlete looking for a protective outer layer to wear on the sidelines or you just want to be extra safe during your chilly morning walks, there are more sweatshirts and jackets with solid UPF protection than you might think. Vuori’s ultra-soft crewneck pullover and Nike’s track jacket are both lightweight, sun-safe, and easy to travel with. Athleta’s full-zip makes an excellent workout buddy, and The North Face’s hoodie was practically meant for spring and fall treks.

    UPF Shorts, Skorts, and Capris
Sun protective bottoms like shorts, skorts, and capris come in plenty of silhouettes. The Skin Cancer Foundation encourages loose-fitting gear because when tighter fitting clothes stretch, the fibers pull away from each other and allow more UV light to pass through. We love Outdoor Voices’ and Coolibar’s relaxed vibe for lounging or low-key movement. For hiking, you can’t go wrong with Columbia, or Kuhl’s skort that’s both functional and stylish.

    Pants and Jumpsuits
If you’re into lounging outdoors in the spring, Vuori and Beyond Yoga’s super soft fabrics offer a solid amount of protection and warmth. Athleta makes a cute pair of convertible pants perfect for outdoor activity (and we think they’re great street-style pants too). Looking for resort wear? Coolibar’s flowy pants make an excellent protective option that doesn’t sacrifice style.

In addition to a protective hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are always a good idea. “Hats are a perfect complement to UV-filtering sunglasses and broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your face and eyes,” said the SCF. While there are plenty of trendy sun hat options, it’s important you invest in a design that will actually protect your skin.

“The best hats for sun protection have a brim of at least three inches to shade the face, scalp, neck, shoulders and upper back, along with easily overlooked places like the tops of the ears and back of the neck,” the SCF explained. “Look for a tightly woven hat rather than a loosely constructed straw hat that lets in the UV rays.”

    Reversible Ultra Wide Brim Hat
With a near-perfect rating, this is the sun hat that will keep you summer-ready. It features an ultra-wide brim to protect your face, neck and shoulders. Plus, it's rated with UPF 50+ to give you the necessary sun protection during your outdoor activities. In other words, think of it as a wearable umbrella.

The hair and makeup, the outfits, the music — all the fabulousness of festival season is in full effect. This also means you're spending a lot of time outside, likely in full sunshine. So just like you prepare those eye-catching looks, taking time to map out your sun-protection strategy should be part of the plan. We're not here to be party poopers — in fact, we're here to make life easier with some sun-care tips and tricks.

Keep reading for tips on how to avoid a sunburn this festival season.

Keep Your SPF Handy, and Reapply
Sorry to make this sound like school, but there are some sunscreen rules to follow. First, you want to choose something with an adequate SPF level. Most dermatologists recommend broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. It's best to apply it after your moisturizer and 30 minutes before venturing outside. You'll need to reapply it every two hours (more frequently if you're sweating or swimming). SPF formulated for the face is gentler than ones for the body, but if you want to make things easy and save space in your bag, pick one like the Kiehl's Activated Sun Protector Water-Light Lotion For Face & Body ($32) that's good for both. How much do you need? Experts say a nickel-size dollop is adequate for the face and a shot-glass size will do it for your body.

    Stay Shaded
Adding a hat to your ensemble will help safeguard your face, eyes, ears, neck, and scalp from the sun's damaging UV rays. Of course, you'll still need to apply sunscreen, but think of a hat as protective insurance — and it may also add a little something-something to your ensemble. Look for a style with a wide enough brim to shield you. As for the fabric, experts recommend something tightly woven so sunlight can't easily make its way through. You can also consider choosing a hat like the Solbari Reversible Ultra Wide Brim Hat UPF 50+ ($55) that has an ultraviolet protection factor, or UPF, built into the fabric to create a barrier between the UV rays and your hair and skin.

Make Your Wardrobe Work For You
You can also go for clothing with UPF. Everything from swimsuits to rash guards (great for doubling as tops) to hoodies has UPF. And if it's something with the protection perk of long sleeves, like this Lands' End UPF 50 Long Sleeve Rash Guard ($60), even better. These fabrics often have the added benefit of moisture wicking as well.

    Try Colorful Sunscreen
While it shouldn't replace your regular sunscreen, you can apply a colorful zinc oxide formula like the Zinka Colored Nosecoat ($27) on your nose and cheeks to block UV rays (over your regular SPF). It's like functional face art!

    Protect Lips and Hair
Your lips and scalp shouldn't be excluded from your-protection efforts. A lip balm like the Aquaphor Lip Protectant + Sunscreen ($4) with at least an SPF of 15 will keep them cared for with the added bonus of moisture. And the same sunscreen rules apply: reapply every two hours and, when it comes to lips, after you eat or drink. As for your scalp, it's not spared from potential sunburn. Try spraying your hairline, hair, and part (since it's where the scalp is exposed) with a special formula like the Coola Scalp & Hair Mist Organic Sunscreen SPF 30 ($26) that will also shield strands from color-fading UV rays.

I have to admit, I’m a bit of a spa rat – even more so than Christina. So skincare for me for Christmas is always well-received.

These gift ideas are all things I’d definitely use – especially the Enbacci scrub, which leaves your skin feeling ridiculously smooth, and the Vatéa gift pack is like a whole skincare routine.

I also love the Solbari moisturising sunscreen, which goes on so smoothly and easily with no ghosting, and the body washes and face creams from Melissa Allen Mood Essentials are so uplifting.

These are all Australian-made products too, which is great. I’m still getting my head around the RoC Retinol Correxion kit, but Christina’s really excited about this one.

5 Christmas gift ideas for beauty essentials:

    1. Melissa Allen Mood Essentials fragrances and body washes — Developed from her love of fragrances, Melissa Allen’s Mood Essentials range of scents is designed to give you back the power of being you.

Our general understanding of dressing for the summer sun is that the least amount of clothing we have covering us, the better equipped we feel to deal with the high temperatures. It feels silly to even state the obvious. But for those who consider themselves to be outdoorsy types – we’re talking the adventurous kind, like trail runners and hikers, kayakers, mountain climbers, and so on – wearing less clothing when you’re spending a significant amount of time in the sun can actually do more harm than good.

Sure, there’s sunscreen, and we’re in no way suggesting you should stop applying tons of it. But that’s also where another problem arises: In order to actually protect your skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, sunscreen needs to be slathered on regularly. And, if you’re spending more time outside than you are indoors, that gets expensive, too.

So, just cover yourself more during the peak hours of sunlight, right? That should do the trick? Well, it’s not quite that simple. While some additional shielding from the sun’s damaging rays is better than none, not all clothing provides equal buffering. And that’s where sun-protective clothing comes in.

According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, the Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) is a measurement that indicates how much ultraviolet radiation can penetrate a fabric to reach your skin. This is a different metric from the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of sunscreens, which measures the time it takes for the sun’s ultraviolet radiation to redden exposed skin. It’s also worth mentioning that UPF gauges both UVA and UVB rays, whereas SPF only takes into consideration the latter.

To put this into perspective, your average white tee has a UPF of around 7, and that drops to 3 when it’s wet. A long-sleeved denim shirt in a dark color has a much higher UPF of about 1,700, which The Skin Cancer Foundation rates as providing complete sun protection.

But since wearing something like the above-mentioned denim shirt while out and about on an adventure is certainly far from pleasant, the makers of sun protective clothing have found a solution: They’ve developed high-tech gear using the most advanced materials and constructions to ensure you’re safely covered while at the same time kept as cool as possible.

So, for the style-conscious swashbuckler who’d like to stay ultra-safe under the sun, we bring you 8 of the best sun protection shirts (all of them with a UPF of 50 or 50+) that can take you from bushwhacking in the morning and back to the bar in time for evening drinks.

Solbari Business Shirt UPF 50+ Dry Flex Collection– Okay, so maybe you wouldn’t pick a crisp white top for a dusty hike, but if you’re a businessman on the run (both literally and figuratively), you never know where you might end up. Plus, you can’t go wrong with a classic office shirt that requires no ironing. If that doesn’t convince you, take solace in the knowledge that a UPF of 50+ guarantees you won’t get pierced by the sun, even if you’re only heading out to grab your next coffee.

It’s important to note that the use of sunscreen suited for both UVA and UVB rays is always the recommended sun protection method. Most conflict is rooted in unmet needs. And this summer 2021, some of those needs can only be met by sunscreen. It doesn’t matter whether you are a beachgoer or not: You will need to make the first move towards protecting your skin from harmful rays of the sun no matter the forecast.

In fact, sunscreen needs to be an important step prior to heading outdoors. I wear sunscreen every each morning and I bring a small size with me to go about my day and reapply four hours later. It is that important. In short, applying (and reapplying!) SPF protects your skin from the sun’s powerful UV rays, minimizing your risk of dark spots, painful burns, wrinkles and skin cancer.

“It’s important to use sunscreen on a daily basis to protect you from the damaging ultraviolet radiation from the sun, on both sunny and cloudy days. The sun’s rays cause skin cancers to develop, such as squamous cell carcinomas, melanomas, and basal cell carcinomas and the daily use of sunblock reduces this risk by half. In addition, the daily use of sunscreen helps prevent premature aging of the skin, causing the degradation of our skin’s collagen, which contributes to formation of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging. Without proper sunscreen protection, one is more likely to develop sun spots, age spots, melasma, hyperpigmentation, discoloration, and uneven skin tone and texture.” says Dr. Michele Green Cosmetic Dermatologist, Upper East Side NYC. Nevertheless, shopping for the best sunscreen can be overwhelming to consumers albeit online or brick and mortar.

The best hats for men add an extra dollop of style to any outfit, yes, even when wearing a t-shirt and jeans. A hat worn rakishly over one eye like Idris Elba adds a touch of raffish charm, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Of course, hats can also be more practical. A stylish baseball cap can help you hide that regrettable attempt at a DIY quarantine haircut, and there’s a long tradition of men using hats to cover up bald spots.

There are many types of hats for men, and it seems like many of the best hats for men get showcased during the spring and summer months. After all, the hot weather is kind to hat lovers. Whether you’re off for a weekend of camping, hitting a festival or a party (remember those?), there’s a hat that can, ahem, top off your outfit.

Some hats, like the top hat and the boater, are reserved for specific events like weddings or Jazz-themed lawn parties. And unlike other eras, wearing the wrong hat won’t cause a riot. Yep, at one point society had loads of rules regarding men’s fashion. Gentlemen were supposed to wear straw hats in the summer and switch to woolen styles for the rest of the year. A straw hat in 1922 even caused a three-day riot in New York City, as this hilarious article in The New York Times attests.

Then there was the fiasco of John. F Kennedy’s inauguration. A reporter misspoke and stated that the president was hatless when taking the oath of office, and the next day hat sales declined dramatically. There’s a witty, well-written book that covers men’s hats, their place in society and more by Neil Steinberg, Hatless Jack: The President, The Fedora and the Death of the Hat, and it will make you laugh out loud.

But you aren’t here for a history lesson! You’re here to find the best men’s hats for your persona style. Nowadays, most guys have at least one ball cap and beanie in their closet. Celebrities like Timothée Chalamet, Idris Elba, Brad Pitt, Justin Timberlake and Tom Brady are well known for their hat game. Unlike shoes, hats don’t take up much closet space.

You can pick a hat based on your activity. If you’re running and want to keep the sun out of your eyes, a ballcap works just fine. Hiking, you’ll want a brimmed cotton hat to keep the sweat off your face, and if it has a strap, that’s a bonus, as you let the hat hang like a necklace when not in use. Straw hats also let your scalp breathe, so if you’re outside all day long, try one. With Cuban style in vogue right now, it’s a timely and comfortable look.

Most importantly, don’t be afraid to try new types of hats. It might take some trial and error to find the style that’s best for you.

For Summer 2021, hats are continuing to be a pretty big thing fashion-wise right now. The three biggest hat trends for the summer, which coincidentally are the best hats for men are bucket hats, baseball caps and straw hats. When it comes to bucket hats, if you can think of a color, a pattern, a comic book character, you’ll find a matching bucket hat. They’re that ubiquitous.

When discussing the baseball hat trend, you can find them in denim (a trendy fabric for the season), and everywhere from super high-end designers to wallet-friendly deals. As with bucket hats, you can find them in everything from camo to Hawaiian prints, to retro styles, to sports teams. The baseball hat has been elevated from a basic to a must-have summer essential.

Straw Panama Fedora hats are a perennial favorite. Just as designers couldn’t stop playing with bucket and baseball caps, they started re-inventing the straw hat as a summer accessory and used everything from Amish straw hats to Aussie outback and lifeguard hats and yes, straw Cowboy and porkpie hats to freshen up men’s haberdashery. A couple of men’s designers like Ami and Fendi showed oversized hats, but if a hat can come up to your knee, would you really want to wear it? Think of those hats as more “editorial” than commuting-friendly. We’re still seeing trucker, beanies, and dad hats hanging around too.

In conclusion, it seems that guys finally have more than a few options when it comes to adding flair to what they wear. And with all those options come decisions and that leads us to our most important fashion rule: If you like it, wear it.

Finding the Best Hats for Your Face Shape — As you would when wearing sunglasses, you need to match your hat to your head and face shape.

There are six basic face shapes: round, long, square, diamond, oval, and heart-shaped. Each face shape can wear different types of hats. You want to pick the best hats for men that complement your bone structure.

If you’ve got a long face, look for hats that cut across the forehead, as they shorten the face shape. Say no to beanies, but yes to wide-brimmed or cowboy hats.

Fedoras, flat caps, and hats worn further back on your head are fine if you have a round face. If you love beanies, wear them towards the back of your head.

Diamond-shaped faces tend to have a narrow jawline, so look for hats with a shallow crown like a pork pie hat, or do what round faces do, and place the hat further back on the head. Heart-shaped faces should look for clipped brims like a newsboy or flat cap, fedora, ball or trucker hat. If you have an oval-shaped face, you can wear anything.

Finally, floppy or wide-brimmed hats are great for guys with a square-shaped face, as the hats complement the bone structure instead of exaggerating it. Now that you’ve figured out what type of hat works for you, scroll through the best hats for men this summer.

While sunblock is certainly your best protection against the blazing sun, you should also consider wearing sun-protective clothing as another layer of defense.

“Protecting yourself against the sun’s harmful UV rays can reduce your risk of developing skin cancer and prevent premature skin aging,” Chipps said, noting that “about 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers and 86 percent of melanomas are caused by UV radiation.”

“Using sun protective clothing is one part of an effective sun protection routine, which also includes applying sunscreen, seeking shade, and avoiding exposure at peak sun hours between 10 AM and 4 PM.”

“A white t-shirt only has an SPF of 8.” Chipps further explained that while covering your skin with any clothing is a step in the right direction, “not all clothing is created equal.”

UPF clothing brands, recommended by experts. While we focused mainly on UPF clothing for women, many of the following brands also sell options for men, kids and babies as well.

When you’re in the sun protection business, getting the Seal of Recommendation from the Skin Cancer Foundation is considered the ultimate nod of approval. That’s just what happened recently with Solbari, a Melbourne, Australia-based brand that sells apparel, accessories, lotions and sunscreens to protect against the harmful rays of the sun.

The group provided the Seal to Solbari’s Sensitive, Active and Coolasun collections, which together represent nearly 80 percent of the brand’s apparel offering.

Solbari was founded six years ago by Jo Young who is passionate about keeping people safe when they’re outside. In her home country, she said, two out of every three people will develop skin cancer in their lifetimes. And in the U.S., it’s one in five.

So she created Solbari, a direct-to-consumer brand that offers more than 100 products for men and women featuring fabrics with UPF 50-plus protection that lasts for the life of the garment. “It’s the equivalent of wearing SPF 50 all day,” she said.

Among the bestselling items are long-sleeve polos for men and women — a product that has become a signature for the brand — along with broad-brim hats that protect the face, neck and ears. New this season are leggings, driving gloves and loose-fit tops made from organic cotton and bamboo.

Women represent 70 percent of Solbari’s customer base now but men are starting to get the message, too, Young said, as they pay more attention to their skin and seek out protection while they’re on the golf course, hiking or at the beach.

The U.S. has now grown to become Solbari’s largest market and the company operates an office in Carlsbad, Calif. And although the business is nearly all online now, Young said her goal is create a wholesale business with specialty stores in the outdoor and active communities.

But beyond that, her life’s mission is to educate as many people as possible that they can look great while outdoors and still be protected. ”I have a background in finance, and I enjoyed that, but 90 percent of skin aging is caused by sun exposure,” she said. “Those stats shocked me and I felt like my calling in life is to help people and eradicate this disease.”

Summer is the time when you pay extra attention to sun exposure. Though you should wear sunscreen year-round — yes, even in the wintertime — right now, with all your backyard barbecues and trips to the park, it’s important to slather that on and invest in sun-protective clothing. If you’ve never considered the latter before, TZR spoke with experts to break down exactly what it entails and found some stylish and functional clothes in the process for you to shop.

The ability of any clothing item to protect you from the sun is measured by UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor). A UV protective garment is considered as such when it is able to absorb and/or reflect UVA (type A ultraviolet) and UVB (type B ultraviolet) rays. “The UPF rating in apparel is similar to the SPF rating in sunscreens,” says Dr. Mamina Turegano, M.D., to TZR. “If you have a UPF of 40, it would take 40 times as long to get burned compared to not wearing any UPF [clothing].”

SPF refers to the amount of protection a topical substance offers you from UVB rays (the kind that produces sunburns and plays the greatest role in causing skin cancers) while the UPF factor describes how much protection a piece of clothing offers you from both UVA and UVB rays. This is an important distinction because UVA rays penetrate more deeply into the skin and play a greater role in your skin’s aging process, including wrinkle formation. “Sunscreen alone is not 100% effective at protecting your skin from UV rays, and if you don’t re-apply, the effectiveness wears off,” Turegano says. “UV protective garments will provide that extra layer of protection, especially for prolonged periods outdoors.”

For an item to be considered sun protective, it has to have a UPF rating of at least 15. Additionally, in order to be recognized by the Skin Cancer Foundation’s official Seal of Recommendation, the garment must have a UPF rating of 30 or above. The Seal of Recommendation is a voluntary recognition that some brands choose to apply for in order to get that extra badge of approval. While shopping for sun protective garments, you might notice how the UPF rating number doesn’t usually go above 50 — and the reason for that is a UPF value above 50 doesn’t provide significantly improved protection from UV rays. So instead of reporting seemingly impressive numbers like UPF 100 or UPF 500, most brands simply state UPF 50+.

To achieve UV protective quality, each garment has to go through special treatments such as chemical processing (adding UV-absorbing components to the fabric) or thread-kneading (where the manufacturer ‘kneads in’ material that physically reflects UV rays.) “It is a misconception that regular materials and fabrics will protect you from the sun because they are technically covering your skin,” Michael Zakrzewski, director of communications at UNIQLO, tells TZR. “Except for tightly woven fabrics such as denim, regular fabrics do not offer enough protection because UV rays can still penetrate through the garments without added technology.”

Zakrzewski further adds that when you’re shopping for sun-protective clothing, the first piece of information you should look for is the UPF rating. The higher it is, the stronger the protection will be. Additional UV protection, UPF-rated accessories such as hats, sunglasses, and arm sleeves are also helpful and versatile in a way where you can put them on and take them off as needed. “I would look for things that you would feel motivated to wear regularly,” Turegano adds. “Regular and consistent sun-protective practices have been shown to be the most helpful way to prevent skin cancer and accelerated aging.”

To sum it up, you should wear both sun-protective clothing and sunscreen as either one alone isn’t nearly as effective. Below, shop some UV protective items like a swimsuit, slip dress, and leggings.

Solbari: On The Move Essential Leggings With pockets, UPF50+ — These functional performance leggings are a step above your favourite pair of stretchy pants. Designed and tested to have a stellar UPF factor of 50+, it blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

    1. Keep using sunscreen– Concerns were raised last week when researchers from the US Food and Drug Administration published findings in the medical journal JAMA that revealed that the chemicals in sunscreens are absorbed into the bloodstream. But, says Dr Andrew Birnie, a skin cancer surgeon and spokesman for the British Association of Dermatologists, it is still important to use it. “It’s worth noting that the amounts of sunscreen used in this study were significantly higher than the average person would use in normal circumstances,” he says. And it’s vital to apply it correctly. Research by the University of Liverpool has shown that on average people miss almost 10 per cent of their face when applying sunscreen, with the area around the eyes and nose the most neglected. Choose a sun cream over an SPF moisturiser. The latest issue of the scientific journal Plos One found that those who use SPF moisturisers tend to miss more, especially the eyelids.

    2. Eat a spoonful of tomato puree every day– Lycopene, a carotenoid that gives tomatoes their colour, has been shown to protect skin against UV light damage. Daily consumption of cooked or dried tomatoes, for optimal absorption, is the best way to boost lycopene intake. A 2017 study by Ohio State University showed that mice fed a daily diet of tomato powder and exposed to ultraviolet light experienced a 50 per cent decrease in skin cancer tumours compared with mice that didn’t consume tomato. A spoonful of tomato puree reduces skin reddening after sun exposure, reported the British Journal of Dermatology.

    3. Wear the right clothes– “The first line of defence against the sun should always be shade and clothing,” says Birnie. Black and dark blue tend to absorb more UV (meaning less reaches your skin) than lighter colours. If you wear colours, choose vivid ones — a red top absorbs substantially more UV rays than pale pink. Fabric with a tight weave, such as denim, allows less UV light through. And clothing with an embedded sun protection factor is a good idea. The British Association of Dermatologists recommends clothing produced with Ultraviolet Protection Factor: try Solbari and Cotswold Outdoor.

Solbari has been reviewed by doctors for The Daily Mail amongst a selection of products that could help protect gardeners from sun damage.

From avoiding a cricked back and swarms of insects to gloves that help conquer arthritis... we reveal the guide to being a healthy gardener.

Research has linked being green-fingered to everything from higher vitamin D levels to lower blood pressure. And last month, a study in the journal Neurology listed gardening as one of a handful of activities that could lower the risk of dementia in old age. This is thought to be down to the combination of physical and mental stimulation it provides.

But being out in the garden makes us vulnerable to a host of health hazards, from back injuries to skin problems. Here doctors review a selection of products that could help protect gardeners — we then rated them.

The Solbari Wanderlust Sun Visor — This cotton hat promises to block 98 per cent of harmful rays, which the maker says is equivalent to wearing SPF50. Can be worn as a cap, or as a visor by unzipping the top section.

Expert Verdict: 'The ears, hairline and neck are all hot spots for the two most common types of skin cancer — squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma — yet many people forget to protect these areas when gardening,' says Dr Alexandroff. 'But even 30 minutes of unprotected exposure to sunlight increases your risk. It's vital that gardeners protect their heads from the sun's harmful rays and this hat is a decent choice, giving good coverage with a wide brim that covers much of the face.
