Your Story Series: Brianna

Could you please share your experiences around being diagnosed with skin cancer? How has your relationship with the sun changed following your diagnosis?
My journey with skin cancer began at 20 years old, with what I thought was an itchy bug bite on my arm, but turned out to be melanoma. Over the 15 years since, I've been diagnosed with melanoma a total of 16 times, ranging from stage 0 to stage 1b.
With each diagnosis, my outlook on the importance of sun safety changed. In my teens and early twenties, I loved to tan and spend countless hours in the sun and tanning beds, without concern. I now fully understand the dangers of UV damage, and value my skin's long term health. I still love spending time outdoors, or at sunny locations like the beach, but I prioritize protecting my skin while I'm doing it!
What does living a sun-safe life mean to you, and how has sun protection impacted your confidence or comfort when spending time outdoors?
To me, a sun-safe life means continuing to enjoy life outside, but with protection in mind. It means choosing SPF, shade, and UPF clothing. It's not about living in fear- but choosing to prioritize my health over a tan.
Sun protection used to feel like an inconvenience, but now it's empowering. I don't worry about every ray because I'm prepared. It allows me to not just survive, but thrive.
What advice would you give to someone who hasn’t yet embraced sun protection in their routine?
I'd say: don't wait for a wake up call. I know it's easy to feel invincible, especially when you're young or when the damage isn't visible yet. I've been there.
But I've learned the hard way that your skin remembers - every burn and tan. And it could one day lead to something you never expected: early aging, a diagnosis, a scar, a long-term fear that could've been prevented. Wear the sunscreen. Reapply it. Choose the shade. Because you deserve to protect the life you love living!
Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
Whether you're just starting your sun-safe journey or you've been at it for years - you belong here. It isn't about guilt or fear. It's about empowerment, education, and protecting the life you want to keep living.
